L15是国际上唯一一款新一代双发超音速高级教练机，飞机配装两台由FADEC控制的涡扇发动机，采用机翼前缘大边条和翼身融合体的一体化气动布局、三轴四余度数字式电传操纵系统及基于开放式数据总线技术的综合航电系统。

高级教练机已设计成两种不同的类型，L15 AJT（高级喷气式训练）亚音速教练机和L15 LIFT（战斗入门训练）超音速教练机，这使L15更加贴近客户需求。前者主要用于基础高级训练，而后者主要用于战斗入门训练 (LIFT)和战斗机改装训练 (OCU)。除此之外，L15 还能完成作战任务，例如要地防空、边境巡逻、近距支援和对地攻击。

L15 is the only new generation twin-engine supersonic advanced jet trainer in the world. It is powered by two FADEC turbo fan engine, and designed to incorporate modern aerodynamic layout of wing leading edge large strake and wing-body blending, three axis quadruple–redundancy digital fly-by-wire system, integrated avionics system based upon open data bus technology.

L15 advanced trainer has been designed for two different variants, the subsonic L15 AJT (Advanced Jet Training) trainer and the supersonic L15 LIFT (Lead-in Fighter training) trainer, which makes it more customer-tailored. The former is mainly used for basic/advanced training, while the latter is mainly for Lead-in Fighter Training (LIFT), Operational Conversion Unit (OCU) training. Besides, L15 is capable of fulfilling combat missions, such as point Defensive Counter Air (DCA), border Patrolling, Close Air Support and Air-to-Ground Strike.
